Dear [pick your state representative or senator],
As a legislator during the once-a-decade redistricting process that will begin after the release of the 2020 Census data in the fall, you are in the unique position to safeguard our state’s democracy. I urge you to uphold our state’s and country’s Constitution by ensuring that the mapmaking process and maps themselves adhere to the principles of fair and open representative government.
A model redistricting process includes holding at least five accessible and televised public input sessions around the state between when the census data is released and when the redistricting special session starts. It also includes allowing for a public review period of at least three days between when electoral maps are voted out of committee and put up for a final vote.
Fair maps lead to elected bodies representative of our state; fair maps respect the principles of partisan and racial proportionality, while considering existing political boundaries, communities of interest, and geographic compactness.
I strongly request that you incorporate these democratic guideposts in the upcoming redistricting round, which should include long ignored judicial district lines that have become increasingly malapportioned.
To demonstrate your support, I urge you to sign the Fair Districts pledge at https://www.fairdistrictsla.org/pledge.
This is an important part of your legacy. Please work for the citizens of Louisiana and stand firmly on the side of fair districts.
Sincerely,
